Patterns in the Landscape
Portfolio 1: Patterns in the landscape, whether shaped by nature or influenced by the hand of man, continue to exert a powerful attraction on me when I am out with my camera. Understanding how to make patterns work within the confines of a picture frame played a large part in accelerating the development of my own photographic skills, especially compositional skills, and led directly to the formulation of the idea of 'dynamic balance' that is central to my approach. These ideas are further explored in my article Patterns in the Landscape.

'Layers of Time'

I think I am addicted to rock. Or rather the wonderful patterns, colours and textures revealed by the processes of thousands, probably millions of years.

Saltwick Bay is a geological time machine and an inspirational place for me, and I suspect, many photographers who visit.

I left the image unfiltered, which has created a slightly cool, blue cast (characteristic of the bay) which, for me anyway, helps to emphasise the sense of age and time.

Technical Details - Linhof Technikardan, 240mm lens, no filtration. Provia 100. Scanned with an Epson V700.

Location: Saltwick Bay, North Yorkshire
