Jon Brock Landscape Photographs
Depth
Portfolio 5: Photography is a 2 dimensional visual medium viewed by people who see the landscape in three dimensions and perceive it through multiple senses. Creating and suggesting depth in the mind of the viewer is a key element of my approach and something I constantly strive for in my image making.

'Saltwick Nab'

'Saltwick Nab'

This image was made on a summer trip to Saltwick Bay with Tim Parkin and Dave Tolcher.

The main idea here was to construct a sense of depth, through the use of tonal layering (I knew the first rock would stay in shadow due to a large boulder just to the left, out of shot) and the separation of the rocks (I had to put the camera on the tripod at maximum extension - as a result I had to focus by jumping up in the air!).

The final part of the equation was the light; it was 50/50 but after a half hour wait and with a few minutes to go before the sun went down we were treated to a magnificent burst of light.

Technical Details: Linhof Technikardan, 90mm lens, Velvia 50, 2 stop graduated filter. Scanned using an Epson V700.

Buy this image as a greetings card.

Location: Saltwick Bay, North Yorkshire
