Patterns in the Landscape
Portfolio 1: Patterns in the landscape, whether shaped by nature or influenced by the hand of man, continue to exert a powerful attraction on me when I am out with my camera. Understanding how to make patterns work within the confines of a picture frame played a large part in accelerating the development of my own photographic skills, especially compositional skills, and led directly to the formulation of the idea of 'dynamic balance' that is central to my approach. These ideas are further explored in my article Patterns in the Landscape.

'Ringed Pebbles'

The idea of this circular pattern occurred to me one cloudy morning whilst I was working the details at Robin Hoods Bay.

I was attracted to make an image by the colouring in the rock but I was not quite sure what I wanted to do and I considered the options for quite some time. Having already made an image I knew I would be pleased with that morning I decided to experiment a little. I really like the sense of space this image has achieved.
