In and Around The Yorkshire Wolds
The Yorkshire Wolds is an area of chalk upland that runs from York to the East Coast at Flamborough near Bridlington. The Wolds dominate an area that can be marked by the triangle between York, Scarborough and Hull. I know and love this area, growing up near Beverley and spending many weekends in my childhood on the east coast at Bridlington, Flamborough and Filey. I now live in the Lower Derwent Valley, close to York and Pocklington. The Wolds themselves I knew less well and they are without doubt a challenging location to photograph with their narrow, dry valleys. However with the help of local photographer Paul Moon I am beginning to know and love them and come to terms with how I want to interpret the landscape. My objective over the coming years is document the landscape of this remarkable and under photographed area. The Wolds Valleys in particular are a unique national treasure and deserve greater recognition and protection.

'Horse Dale's Light'

I made this image on a trip out to the Yorkshire Wolds with local photographer Paul Moon.

The wolds are a challenging location. We scouted a few locations over the afternoon and I made a couple of images (unfortunately spoilt by light leaks) but the sky was clearing and the interesting light we had earlier was going.

We decided to revisit Horse Dale, a place we had visited a few months before, just in case we got some late light. As we walked down I noticed not only was there a storm brewing but some fastastic dappled light was forming across the far side of the valley. Moving a little further down the valley allowed the key elements of the image to come together and I setup.

A few minutes later we got a burst of sublime, magical light.
