In and Around The Yorkshire Wolds
The Yorkshire Wolds is an area of chalk upland that runs from York to the East Coast at Flamborough near Bridlington. The Wolds dominate an area that can be marked by the triangle between York, Scarborough and Hull. I know and love this area, growing up near Beverley and spending many weekends in my childhood on the east coast at Bridlington, Flamborough and Filey. I now live in the Lower Derwent Valley, close to York and Pocklington. The Wolds themselves I knew less well and they are without doubt a challenging location to photograph with their narrow, dry valleys. However with the help of local photographer Paul Moon I am beginning to know and love them and come to terms with how I want to interpret the landscape. My objective over the coming years is document the landscape of this remarkable and under photographed area. The Wolds Valleys in particular are a unique national treasure and deserve greater recognition and protection.
'Frendal Dale'
I made this image in the Yorkshire Wolds having been introduced to the area (20-30 minutes from my house) by local photographer Paul Moon.
Initially I found the Wolds very challenging but I am gradually coming to terms with the vision and technique needed to photograph successfully in this remarkable area. Both Paul and myself are finding and developing new ways to interpret the wolds landscape. I never though I would find myself delighting in the quality of light from the middle of the day.
