The Skipwith Portfolio
Skipwith is about 5 minutes from my home and it has become my local photographic 'playground'. It is a unique area of ancient Wetland Heath in the Vale of York that is being re-generated. Influenced by reading the work of John Blakemore, I have set myself an objective to make 10 strong images in a small area of the Common over a 12 month period during 2010, deploying all of the ideas described in the first five portfolios and using it as a 'playground' to stimulate new ideas and techniques.

'Skipwith Common'

Skipwith Common is one of the few remaining Northern Heathlands in the country and a designated site of special scientific interest. A couple of miles from my home it is a place I have walked on many occasions, though as a subject for photography it has taken a little time for me to be ready to approach it.

Managed by the Escrick Park Estate it is being gradually regenerated. I made this image one winter afternoon just as a front was clearing through.

The rain has darkened and coloured the grasses red.
