Taming the Complex
Portfolio 4: One of the great challenges in Landscape Photography is mastering the ability to make order, sense and balance from the chaotic; to tame the complex and to make it look easy. I was introduced to the work of Peter Dombrovskis by Joe Cornish several years ago and his unique ability to achieve this in the landscapes of Tasmania has been a constant source of inspiration for me ever since.
'Dancing around the snake'
David Tolcher and I found this magnificent dell in Glen Orchy one afternoon as we were scouting out the area. The dell looked very promising and we returned straight back with our gear.
However the initial promise turned to frustration as we both found the location very challenging in terms of complexity - especially with so much ice in the water.
Eventually I noticed a bizare looking branch dangling out over a tree on the opposite bank of the stream. It reminded me of a snake and the idea of constructing an image around the 'snake' occurred to me.
This composition was the result.
