The magnificent Whitby steps, experienced during a summer dawn.
It is the relationship between the steps and the Harbour that attracted me to this image, made on a trip to Whitby with David Tolcher. The balance in the image is pleasing and the steps help to convey depth. The atmosphere is tranquil and peaceful, a recent shower of rain adding a reflective quality to the steps.
5 stops of grad were needed to balance the sky to the steps and to compensate for light fall off from such a large tilt. This is an image, in my view, that can only be made effectively with a large format view camera.
