HDR and the photoshop shadow-highlight tools have a lot to answer for. There seems to be a class of image created today where every pixel has been mastered to a midpoint, every bit of shadow detail is there to be seen in its full glory. The parallels with overly compressed and loud music recordings are apt - both approaches seem to seeking to achieve the same objective - shout just that bit louder at the viewer/listener amongst a sea of shouty artwork.
The use of black shadow to help simplify and secure greater separation was a key ingredient to making this image work and a high constrast film like Velvia was critical to enable this to happen.
