Buttermere day four

More pottering around the lakes
After the exertions of yesterday, it was always going to be a quiet day pottering around the lake. We walked round to Scales Force passing some amazing trees including holly trees, apple trees and hawthorn. However it was the wonderful oak trees that caught my attention today and I made several oak study images. This was the first shooting into the wonderful oak woods above the near side of Crummock Water.

For some reason the oaks are superb this year - though possibly it is my memory that is playing tricks on me as the larches which tend to dominate the area around Buttermere with vivid yellow leaves are more muted this year.

Just to prove I made it to Scales Force I made an image, sort of like photographic tag. It is a very strange waterfall with such a narrow top section.

As I walked back to the hotel the rain started to come in however it was the conditions that made me finally stop and think about photographing an amazing oak tree close to the hotel. I must have passed it 7 or 8 times this year and it has caught my eye every time. It was the combination of rain and the waterfall behind that persuaded me to give it a go.

After a spot of lunch and a coffee in the excellent Buttermere cafe, I decided to spend an hour or so pottering in the National Trust woods at Crummock water. A nice walk at any time but with the oak trees as they are it was lovely. I made an oak tree composition in the upper woods first.

I then walked down to the lower woods and setup an old favourite composition. Any view camera image where you can sit down on a rock and place your bag next to you whilst you work in such a quiet and peaceful spot undisturbed by anyone else is a joy to make.

Finally I made one last oak tree study, this time using Haystacks as a backdrop rather than the waterfall but hopefully epitimising Buttermere this Autumn. The end of day four and my car still hasn't moved since I parked it on Saturday afternoon!
